Some drivers will need to file a form called an SR-22 with their state to show proof of liability insurance. Here are some common questions that people ask when they are required to maintain SR22 insurance.

What is an SR-22 form?

An SR22 form is a document that shows the state you have current auto liability insurance. Sometimes referred to as a financial responsibility form the SR-22 is submitted by an auto insurance company to the state electronically. If there is any change to the auto insurance policy with the SR22 attached the state will know immediately. Changes would include cancellation, lapse for non-payment or vehicle changes. If the policy does cancel prior to the end of your required holding period your license will likely be suspended again. Most states require a driver to carry an SR22 for three (3) years from the date the license is reinstated.

How much does an SR22 cost?

There is no one set price for adding an SR-22 form to your auto insurance because there are many factors that affect the premium. To add an SR22 there is a filing fee of $15-$30 depending on the insurance company and state you drive in. There is no additional cost of having the filing but your car insurance is likely to increase due to the nature of the SR-22 form. Most people are required to file the form after a major traffic violation.

Why do I need to file an SR22 insurance policy?

Most drivers who are required to file an SR22 have been convicted of driving under the influence (DUI). In some states like Florida and Virginia a driver convicted of DUI will need an FR-44 form. There are many other reasons why you may need it including failure to pay child support, failure to stop at scene of accident, or failure to maintain proper liability insurance. Each state has different laws which determine when a driver needs to file an SR22 form. Not all state require it so if you are moving be sure to ask prior to cancelling your policy.

Which auto insurance companies offer SR-22 insurance?

Most auto insurance carriers will provide an SR22 but they do need to be licensed to sell in that state. Always deal with a trusted and well recognized insurance brand like State Farm, Amica, or Allstate which are proven leaders in the industry. If you find a lower rate at another insurance company you can switch to them during the policy period while you have an SR22. Be sure to have the new policy in force with the SR22 included prior to cancelling your old policy.
